Ah, those history books. They can be damning. As noted by PoliticalWire, Bill Clinton claimed that his primary in 1992 was over in early April. Scroll south for the quotes...
From My Life by Bill Clinton - page 407, first sentence, last paragraph:
On April 7, we also won in Kansas, Minnesota and Wisconsin. On April 9, Paul Tsongas announced that he would not reenter the race. The fight for the nomination was effectively over. I had more than half the 2,145 delegates I needed to be nominated, and had only Jerry Brown to compete with the rest of the way in.
And a few pages over...
On June 2, I won the primaries in Ohio, New Jersey...Finally, I had clinched the nomination.
Last week Hillary Clinton said this, among other things of course, in South Dakota:
"My husband did not wrap up the nomination in 1992 until he won the California primary," Mrs. Clinton told the paper’s editorial board, "somewhere in the middle of June."
Middle of June, huh? Not really, Senutor C.
And The New York Times and Steve McMahon recall it more like Bill, than Hillary:
"Even if it wasn’t technically finished, it was clear to everybody involved that it was over well before June," Steve McMahon, a media strategist for Mr. Brown in the 1992 race, said Monday in an interview.
Yet again she mis-remembers.
[UPDATED]: A commenter asked if anyone was calling for Brown to get out before June 2nd. While I do not know, I can say that on June 2, 1992 the following states held primaries: Ohio, New Jersey, California (Brown's home state), Alabama, Montana and New Mexico. That's a big difference from Montana, Puerto Rico and South Dakota. That said, I am not calling for Clinton to drop out now, I am simply calling her out on her inconsistencies. I think she does have every right to let every state vote, however on June 3rd that changes.
