Something just didn't sit right with me with Billy K's latest Op-Ed in the birdcage liner formerly known as the "Paper of Record". And while I was sitting on the V train home from work I realized what it was.
Kristol's point (and I am obviously using that term loosely) is that Senator Obama's speech at Wesleyan's commencement somehow slighted the members of our military:
But there’s one obvious path of service Obama doesn’t recommend — or even mention: military service. He does mention war twice: "At a time of war, we need you to work for peace." And, we face "big challenges like war and recession." But there’s nothing about serving your country in uniform.
Now I realize that Kristol is an incredibly busy man, but as a politcal commentator, shouldn't he have noticed that we are currently in the midst of a national debate of the "New GI Bill"? I may not be a world famous leader of the conservative flock, but a simple google search for "obama 'gi bill'" returns about 1,470,000 hits. With 5-10 seconds of "research", I was able to find that Obama has been an incredibly vocal supporter of extending benefits to members of our military similar to what he was proposing for those who do other types of service. It's almost as though Obama is being even-handed and fair in these matters.
Snark aside - this has to stop. Kristol is an embarrassment to the New York Times, and even an embarrassment to conservatives (if they have any shame left).
