In the Democratic Primary, my candidate lost. My candidate was about as progressive as you can get. Pro-choice, supports unions, a friend to the environment, and the list goes on.
Unfortunately my candidate didn't run a strong enough campaign, failed to outraise the likes of Barack Obama, and came to an unfortunate defeat.
My candidate had the guts to keep their name on the ballot during Michigan's primary, when Edwards and Barack said "no way!"
My candidate also had a health care plan that blew Obama's out of the water.
I'm talking of course, about Dennis Kucinich.
Now I know what you Hillary backers are going to say-he had no chance, he didn't win a single state, he dropped out shortly after Michigan's primary, blah, blah blah....
Well you know what?! If life were fair Kucinich wouldn't just be President of the United States. He'd be President of the whole freakin' galaxy! The next time he saw a UFO, the Martians would be asking for orders from their Commander In Chief!
You want to talk about breaking a glass ceiling? When was the last time a midget had a viable shot at the Presidency? I don't recall any elves getting their shot at running the free world!
Unfortunately despite his strongly liberal views, he lost in Michigan to not just Hillary, but to Unco-freakin'-mmitted! Which means he lost the primary to "none of the above."
He got a lousy 4% of the vote.
Anyway, the point is that there were a lot of supporters who were disappointed that their candidate didn't even come close to getting the nomination. There were Dodd supporters, Kucinich supporters, Richardson supporters, Edwards supporters, etc. I think even Gravel had a couple of guys. This doesn't take away from the disappointment that Hillary supporters are feeling. My point is that the idea that McCain should get the Presidency because Kucinich didn't win never entered my mind. I knew that I'd be backing the nominee, even if they weren't my first, second, or even third pick.
And Obama wasn't even my third pick. He was my fourth, behind Kucinich, Richardson, and Edwards. Three outstanding Democrats who barely made it out the gate.
I know that there are Hillary supporters who were backing her because they wanted to see a woman become President. To them I will say that as of right now, there are 7 female Governors currently serving in the United States. The federal govnernment has 16 female senators, and 74 women in the House of Representatives. It's inevitable that we'll see a woman as President.
But for now, we have a candidate, and he's a good candidate, even if he wasn't the one we first wanted. So in the sake of party unity, the need for reform in our government, and the avoidance of a third Bush term, let's work to put Obama in the White House!
