I was fortunate enough to be elected as a delegate to the MN state convention this year. Going into this I was incredably upset with Al Franken. The last two weeks had been filled with tons of negative press about Al coming from his pattern of saying and writing things that were derogetory and outright offensive to women including his satire in playboy and rape jokes while writing for SNL
I expected Al to brush this all aside as desperate attacks from the people that gave us the war in Iraq and $4 a gallon as a distraction. It would have been the politically safe thing to do. That way he would be in a position of strenght to attack Norm Coleman.
Instead he stood before us all, took responsibility for his words, and appologized. He stood up like a real man should and asked for our forgiveness and tried to make right what he did wrong.
"It kills me that things I said and wrote sent a message ... that they can't count on me to be a champion for women, for all Minnesotans. I'm sorry for that. Because that's not who I am,"
This simple thing told me everything that I need to know about how he is going to act when he gets to Washington. I truly feel proud to be a supporter of him right now. Let me tell you this, Norm Coleman could never do what Al Franken just did.
