I doubt that I was the only person who was impressed with the Biden combination of candor and gravitas on Meet the Press this morning. He demonstrated that he was able to cut a brief direct argument that countered Graham's diatribes on Obama's perceived weaknesses.
Now a summary of Biden's positives and negatives can be summarized in this brief discription on Jason Wright's Political Derby site:
Like Richardson, Biden would bring experience and gravitas to the ticket. But he’s also the consummate Senator: A long-winded, full-of-himself politico who needs 500 words to say what real people could say in 50.
Now, I would be the first one to admit that in the primary Joe Biden would have won the high school-like award as the 'Candidate that likes the most to hear the sound of his own voice'. However, what we have learned from the Obama Campaign is that they are very disciplined and exceptional when it comes to the ability to stay on message. If Senator Biden were to be named VP he would follow the Obama template, having understood, especially as a former presidential contender, that Obama's brand of political style is the most effective.
Also, in terms of experience, Graham went back to the Republican talking point that Obama has chaired a subcommittee that could have influenced our actions in Afghanistan, however has yet to hold a meeting. Biden shot that down and reflected on his experience as Chairman of the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations.
Now I will be the first to say that I have consistently changed my mind on who would be the best Vice Presidential candidate for an Obama ticket, however, I first believe that Obama should focus on experience and not geography. Also, he should focus on gravitas instead of excitement. Also, the Vice Presidential debate could prove pivotal (Imagine Biden going against Pawlenty in foreign policy).
What say you about the prospect of Biden as Obama's Veep, especially based on his performance on Meet the Press today?
