Here's my letter to Burton:
Re: Senator Obama and H.R. 6304 in the Senate
Dear Mr. Burton:
Last September you pledged that Senator Obama would "support a filibuster of any bill that includes retroactive immunity for telecommunications companies." I'm writing to hold you, and Senator Obama, to that pledge.
I'm not going to engage in any false bluster. Even if Senator Obama calculatedly lets this bill slide through, I'll still be voting for him this fall. But I will say this:
So far I've donated about $100 to Senator Obama, and encouraged perhaps $5,000 more in donations. I am fortunate enough to be able to hit the $2,300 ceiling for donations. But if Senator Obama does not support this filibuster, he will not see one more penny from me.
And I've spoken with a lot of friends and acquaintances who feel the same way I do. We will enthusiastically support a candidate who has earned our support, not one who is failing to lead on an important issue. If Senator Obama acts this way now, what better can we expect from him as President?
Respectfully,
