Boilerplate: I am new to Second Life and Daily Kos. You can usually find me blogging as The Accidental Environmentalist. I started this diary to promote Netroots Nation '08 in Second Life. For those of us who cannot attend NN '08 proper, taking place in Austin, Texas during the weekend of July 17-20, being able to see some of it from Second Life will be a great opportunity to participate. Please email me at tmgnordlie@gmail.com if you would like to find out how you can be a part of NNSL '08, and keep checking this diary for more information as it becomes available.
Things are really looking great on Netroots Nation Island in Second Life as the final stages of building take place. There are many organizations setting up booths, and I took a picture of the Books for Soldiers and Town Called Dobson booths, both set up by Second Life's Stormbear Hitchcock.
Books for Soldiers is a non-profit organization started by Storm Bear Williams that helps soldiers get books to read while stationed overseas. As he states in his "About Us" page:
I am a voracious reader and at the beginning of the Gulf War, I had a closet full of paperback books. Books that were not being used. So instead of selling them at the used book store, I packed them up in small care packages and sent them out to all the soldiers, sailors, marines and airmen I had addresses for.
Stormbear, along with many others who have real world interests in the progressive movement, will be on Netroots Nation Island as part of Second Life's involvement in Netroots Nation 2008.
