State senator, serial campaigner, carpetbagger, Conservative Icon, and now dedicated train hater Tom McClintock has emerged as the leading detractor of California's proposed high-speed train system.
This presents California progressives with a great opportunity- we have the opportunity to defeat McClintock not once, but twice, in 2008.
For those of you who don't know, Califonia's long-delayed high-speed train system will finally be on the ballot in November, and if it passes, we'll finally have a real, working alternative to car and air travel, and we might actually be able to meet our greenhouse gas emissions goals.
Plus, high speed trains are completely awesome. Witness:
High speed trains are efficient, environmentally friendly, economically beneficial, and totally cool, but Tom McClintock is convinced that we'd be better off spending the money on more highway expansion, and by extension, more cars on the road, and more greenhouse gasses. Of course, that doesn't bother Tom. Check out this gem from his speech about global warming:
"In a speech in New York several months ago, our own governor called those who question the religion of global warming "fanatics" and vowed our political extinction."
What's even worse is that McClintock doesn't seem to recognize that there is even an energy problem. A brief glance at his platform reveals that he doesn't have a plan to address the economy, gas prices, the unemployment rate in California, the high price of health care, or anything else real people are concerned about. He's still running for congress in 1994.
He honestly believes this:
We will see a new political awakening and a new political realignment in California, and before you know it, we’ll be living once again in Reagan Country.
Let's prove him wrong.
You can deny McClintock a congressional seat by donating to Charlie Brown's campaign for CA-04, and you can spite McClintock again by donating to Californians for High Speed Trains.
