I just got back from an evening of canvassing in Weld County Colorado. Recent polls have shown the race here to be extremely close so I thought I'd share a few personal stories to help alleviate any jitters fellow Kossacks may be feeling because of the poll numbers. We canvassed for one hour and every experience was a positive one with voters who are committed downticket to our candidates.
Our targeted area was a neighborhood of modest well kept single family homes. One of our first homes was what I would term a mixed family, she was a Democrat, he was a lifelong Republican. As we passed her the campaign literature she told us with a gleam in her eye not to worry about her hubby, he was voting for Obama. Her husband told me personally that Obama was the man for the job and that he liked him a great deal. I left with a little spring in my step because this week has been a frustrating one for me.
Two of our homes were owned by Hispanic families, both were supporting Obama and all of our local candidates too. One of the families was headed by a young man who had served eight years in the Navy, he told me how much it had hurt him to see the military misused and abused by the current administration,
The last house we canvassed was owned by a friendly middle-aged woman who told us she would take any kind of yard sign we had to offer and that all the Democrats had the full support of both her and her partner.
So take heart in the idea that even in one of the reddest counties in the state of Colorado we have a good number of supporters. This year they are more committed than ever and they are going to help us change Colorado from a purple state to a blue one. And if you get the chance to canvas in your community take the leap and do it. It is far more rewarding than it is frustrating and it will be the key to winning this election for the White House and the Congress. Call your local Democratic office pick up your clipboard and get out there and talk to your neighbors. Oh and keep the faith, cause we're going to win this one.
