McCain's relentless yapping at Obama's heels seems to have accomplished one thing: turned the focus of the campaign away from him, McCain, and onto Obama.
It makes perfect sense. On their own, McCain and Republicans have nothing of value to offer and so they cannot afford to talk about their programs. So their message is simple: "You think I'm bad? Get a load of the other guy."
Whether or not you believe the Republicans are playing the race card in doing this (and I do), it is important that the Obama campaign right itself and make this race about McCain -- and Bush. Obama knows how this works and so do I and, if you haven't been paying attention, so now do you:
- Bush is bad.
- McCain is Bush.
- McCain is bad.
- Had Enough? Vote Democratic.
That said, look for Obama to sharpen and focus his message now.
Obama, channeling the spirit of Reagan, has decided to follow the Gipper’s footsteps almost to the letter. While addressing a crowd in St. Petersburg this morning, Obama eerily said to the crowd: "So the first thing I want to do, Florida, is just ask you a very simple question," Obama said. "Do you think that you are better off now than you were four years ago or eight years ago? And if you don’t think you’re better off, do you think you can afford another four years of the same failed economic policies that we’ve had under George W. Bush? "
