Since the media described, falsely it seems, but at length, how poorly Sen. Obama will perform among working Americans, particlularly White working Americans, will they now discuss why Sen. McCain is not doing better among that group?
To be clear, I think polls are now just another method used to mislead and misinform people, something like 'core inflation' or seasonally adjusted prices or the unemployment rate. Not including food or fuel costs or aggressively adjusting the price of an item or redefining how unemployment is calculated are a few of the ways by which figures reported by our government are kneaded, massaged and formed into the shape desired by the powers that be. Always misinformation is the result.
a forked tongue example
After hearing folks like Scarborough, Buchanan, Mitchell, Blitzer and, even Chuck Todd wonder on the air and on their various sites 'Why Can't Obama Seal the Deal?' and speculating about what he must be doing wrong and how that situation must bode ill for his campaign, I wonder what will be said now that a Washington Post poll shows Obama with a lead by a 2 to 1 margin over McCain among the nation's low-wage workers? (the Post article) The pundits were so insincerely concerned that this group would not support Obama.
But even among white workers -- a group of voters that has been targeted by both parties as a key to victory in November -- Obama leads McCain by 10 percentage points, 47 percent to 37 percent, and has the advantage as the more empathetic candidate.
Considering that these questions were raised while he was ahead in the polling, while every broadcast discussed in minute detail every potential flaw on the part of Sen. Obama, what must now be asked of Sen. McCain's campaign? Why is this former POW who has served in the Senate for over 24 years losing to a first-term US senator?
The question must be asked: given the 'kitchen sink' level of negative campaigning to which McCain and his supporters have sunk, as well as the pundit-preconceived areas of weakness (The Latino vote won't support Obama, neither will the Former Clinton supporters or working class whites), why isn't McCain doing better? After using the GOP-standard 'inject young white female into campaign attack ad when running against a Black male' tactic and attempting to portray your opponent as uppity, with all the connotations associated with the word, why has McCain not passed 44 percent in any poll of his level of support?
Could it be that more than a few folks consider how he separated from his first wife? Might some folks think that he applied for a second wedding license prior to completely ending his first marriage, apparently against Navy (and officer) rules? Is it that McCain is simply too old, a topic from which we are precluded from discussing? Is it that McCain was too much a child of privilege as the child and grandchild of 4-star admirals, whose pre-academy record did not support his admission, whose academy record did not support the assignments he received? Might folks just remember that one Arizona paper called him the worst of the Keating Five evildoers?
As the folks at FOX or the Scarboroughs of the media would spout on air, SOME would say all of the above.
