As much as I like to make fun of right-wing hypocrites, I remind myself that I have to be careful about throwing the first stone. Of course, in the cases of Larry Craig and Mark Foley, they hand us the stones and beg us to throw them. I don't plan to discuss the details, but today's revelation about John Edwards bring home to me a painful period of time for me and my own family. To be honest, I did not at all believe the rumors that I first heard in 2007. That is why, even in the heat of the three-way primary battle between Edwards, Hillary and Obama, I never brought it up when Edwards supporters were ripping into my guy. Even when the "pictures" came out, I still did not believe, but here we are.
For a time, John Edwards was a bastard. So was I. But he is not a hypocrite. He did not file divorce papers to his wife as she lay in a hospital bed. He did not call Elizabeth a c***. He did not call a hooker to put a diaper on him. And he did not bring his mistress to his house ever, let alone when his wife was there. It's not an excuse. It does not make him better, but I think some folks on the other side of the aisle have been much more cold-blooded vis a vis their family than Edwards was. I know many people here are disappointed, especially those who proctically noimated him for sainthood. But he is a human being. So if human beings disappoint, politican will sure do the same, as will "regular guys" like myself. And that is all I will ever have to say about this matter.
