To the Russian government (Updated: it has been suggested "people"):
We the undersigned, wish to convey our deepest regret for the actions of the Bush administration in helping to create the crisis in Georgia. A huge portion of our country despise their foreign policy methods and are working hard to try to push these idiots out of power.
They are doing everything in their power right now to resist that effort including their very successful past method of instilling fear into the voting public hoping they will act against reason and put a very old and unstable warmonger into the White House to protect them.
The Americans eventually catch on to these manipulations and have pretty much figured out the "terrorists" are not to be feared as they were right after 9/11 and cannot be contained by wars of aggression so they need a new boogeyman. Gentleman, you are being setup by these characters as exactly that.
Many in our country, although good, caring, and fair people, are fearful of the unknown and a bit naive as to the extent power-hungry individuals will go to manipulate their emotions for political gain. Our news organizations are mostly controlled by huge corporations that stand to profit more from continued Republican rule so the general public that does not take an effort to keep itself informed through independent sources is subject to administration propaganda daily.
We all know too that it is not only our country that has this bloc of right wing fanatics that will sacrifice the blood of our young and the future of mankind for the profits and power of today. Your country also has that faction and it is our hope that saner minds are in control of your foreign policy these days. Hearing Mikhail Gorbachev the other day giving some justification to your invasion of Georgia shows that the situation there is not black and white as our administration and one of our presidential contenders would like us to believe.
Our government is on the brink of a huge change if we can get Barack Obama into office and a solid majority of progressive Democrats into Congress. It is our belief that beginning next year our foreign policy will once again enter an era of sanity and our country will move away from trying to manipulate the rest of the world into our image.
This process however cannot be sped up and must proceed naturally for it to fully take hold. President Bush and his administration will do whatever it takes to instill fear and anger into the hearts of American voters and will provoke your country to make itself the target. They will issue statements that belittle your moves and make all kinds of threats that any human being would be right to respond strongly too.
Please, in the name of the future of mankind, do not allow these people to attain their goal. Resist the short term response and allow our electoral process to proceed naturally. Russia has a long history of master chess players that have had the ability to think many moves ahead and not jump at quick gains. George Bush and the far right wing of the Republican Party are checkers players.
We remember the Cold War and the tremendous strain it put on the entire world and have no desire to see it reemerge today. Our astronauts are living together in a marvel of science and engineering supplied by Russian cargo ships. Our economies are tied together today as never before with mutual benefit to all. Most importantly though, we are once again mingling as human beings and seeing that there are no real differences between us other than language. John McCain thought he was speaking for us the other day when he said "Today we are all Georgians". He should have said "Today we are all human". That's what the vast majority of people of all countries believe.
Signed,
The Citizens of the United States of America
Note:
Normally, it would be out of place for ordinary citizens of a country to have direct communication with a foreign government in an attempt to craft foreign policy but it is clear our government is no longer working in the best interest of its citizens or the world. Their actions are clearly only in the interest right now of political power. The stakes are much to high to trust them to do what's right.
I see this letter as a draft and would love for us as a community to edit this and create an online petition that can be delivered to the Russian government so I welcome any suggestions.
I don't want George Bush or John McCain to be the only ones with input on this issue and it is a minefield for the Obama campaign to jump into at this time in anything more than nuance.
