Today here in New York City there are two major newspapers with editorial page articles on prospective VPs. The NY Daily News Editorial today is "Hillary, Hillary, Hillary!" and the New York Times OpEd by David Brooks is titled "Hoping It's Biden."

Brooks opened his OpEd with this quote:
"Barack Obama has decided upon a vice-presidential running mate. And while I don’t know who it is as I write, for the good of the country, I hope he picked Joe Biden."

"There are other veep choices," Brooks writes. "Tim Kaine seems like a solid man, but selecting him would be disastrous. It would underline all the anxieties voters have about youth and inexperience. Evan Bayh has impeccably centrist credentials, but the country is not in the mood for dispassionate caution."

Here is the Web link to the full OpEd:

As a former online comm mgr for Sen. Biden's presidential campaign Web site,, I can hope that whoever Sen. Obama chooses will be able to step with confidence into that spot, as Sen. Biden says, "because there will be no margin for error."

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

If Brooks' political instincts are behind it, it must be wrong.

But I'll wait til Broder mouths off for confirmation.

I know who Obama's veep will be. You can too!

I was just fine with Biden as the possible choice until you posted this - anybody Brooks is comfortable with on the Democratic side is immediately suspect in my book.  OK, I'm sort of kidding, and I like Joe Biden (I used to be friends with several of his staffers in the late 70's, early 80's), but really - David Brooks's recommendation isn't something to trumpet to Democrats, IMO.

  •  Why (7+ / 0-)

Would we listen to anything David Brooks says?
    Beyond that I like Biden.

    •  Because Brooks actually thinks about things (0+ / 0-)

I don't agree with a lot of what he says, but I find his columns interesting and provocative. I do not feel that I should be confronted only with articles that confirm my own ideas upon opening the newspaper. I read the opinions of people with whom I disagree, and I can like and respect people with whom I strongly, even at times vehemently, disagree. Brooks is one of those people.

There is no call to be abusive of a pretty decent journalist just because he is a conservative.

his column makes good points. Everyone in my family, from the Hillary supporters to the part-time Republicans (my dad voted for Giuliani for mayor once), are on board with Biden.

...who is going to sway Democrats one way or the other; however, he can sway some independents if Biden is the VP.  I hope it is Biden because he is a Pit bull on steroids - which is what we need against those yapping rethugs curs.

  •  "because there will be no margin for error?" LMAO (0+ / 0-)

If there's no margin for error then it can't be Biden, a narcissistic blowbag who will step in his own shit with remarkable frequency.  Biden is in love with hiw own voice; is easily spun around, and is not as bright as at least thirty easily named senators.

If Obama hass chosen Biden, he has blown it in spectacular fashion.

Look, Brooks drives me as crazy as the next. I disagree with 90% of what he says, but the truth is that post-Iraq-fiasco the guy has done some serious soul searching (assuming he has a soul of course) and sometimes comes up with some interesting stuff to say, such as this column.

Fundamentally, Brooks is right about why Biden is the right choice for Obama.  Gives him an experienced and knowledgeable VP who will be vital in the Obama administration, and also a good resource during the campaign.  Plus, I didn't know about a lot of Biden's personal history, so Brooks did his job on that account too.

Look at this way: Biden is the anti-Cheney.  I can't wait to see him rip apart Mittens.

  •  Biden should not be the choice (0+ / 0-)

If Brooks and the establishmment media are pushing him, that's a sure recipe for disaster.   He is the safe choice, but not the best choice.

Voted for the war in Iraq and then compunded that by calling for the dividing of Iraq into three regions.  Terrible idea.

When did it become accepted fact that Biden's a forign policy genius?

and grew angry at the continuing disrespect and failure to give Obama his due.  What set me off?  This: "Biden’s the one. The only question is whether Obama was wise and self-aware enough to know that."  In the actual hard copy of the paper, this quote was highlighted.

Fuck you, Mr. Brooks.  Hands down, Obama is one of the best political strategists in the country right now.  I'm sick of seeing all manner of hack and clown presume themselves better able to direct Obama's campaign than the candidate himself.  This is someone who took himself from an unknown African American candidate with the name Barack Hussein Obama to the favorite to win the presidency despite not taking a penny of lobbyist or special interest money.  He has the most donors in history.

I'd thank Brooks and others like him to allow Obama to continue to run his brilliant and winning campaign, thank you very much.
