Okay
I want to try to clear up a problem that I'm having and that I think others are having in our attempts to reduce traffic to AP articles
this diary only applies right now to Yahoo members
action update:
- send user feedback to Yahoo Mail
- rec up my suggestion to Yahoo News. Comment there. Write your own suggestion.
- change the news sources on your My.Yahoo page... together we may be able to push non-AP news articles so that Yahoo Mail users get some variety
so if you log in to http://my.yahoo.com
you can easily change the news feeds on your customized yahoo homepage, by following the hot pink circles... it's possible to delete the feed by clicking on the X that is circled all the way over to the right...
the problem that i am still encountering, though, and which i think every one else may still be encountering is this:
no matter what settings I try, I am unable to get rid of the AP news links that appear WHEN I LOG INTO MY EMAIL. I imagine that this is where most people see the AP headlines.
Also, if you just go into the Yahoo News page, no matter what your settings are (for your preferred news sources through my.yahoo.com) you will get a disturbing homogeneity of AP articles.
e.g.
Yahoo News and Yahoo Mail do not provide any way to avoid AP articles. I believe you are only able to change your news sources on the My Yahoo page, which few people probably use. In contrast, Google News relies on a greater variety of sources on its pages, and Gmail does not shill for the AP or any other news source when you log-in to your email.
If I'm wrong and you know how to change the appearance of these Yahoo pages (News and Mail), please let me know in the comments, and I'll be happy to provide instructions with screen-grabs and circles and arrows so that we can avoid giving the Associated Press (and the GOP press operation) more mojo
