Just after Barack's AMAZING(!!) speech, my mother, a life-long Republican, got up from the couch and said 'I don't know how I'll vote. I certainly don't love John McCain'.
I nearly fell over.
She's been watching the major speeches all week. Said she was really impressed by Michelle and loved how they involved Melia and Sasha and the whole Biden family. And it doesn't hurt that my mom is originally from just outside Scranton herself.
During Barack's speech tonight, she said 'I think he's genuine but I just don't understand how he's going to pay for all the things he talks about doing.' Without talking over too much of the speech, I quickly went over his windfall profits tax plan, and of course the $12.5 billion per month we'd save from ending the Iraq occupation. As well as new tax plans that would make the wealthy pay their fair share.
I don't know if I put her mind at ease, but after I heard her say she was undecided, my mind was a little more at ease about this election. But I know there's alot of work left to do. We have the entire right-wing machine, as well as the majority of the media to fight. It's inspired me to volunteer for a political campaign for the first time ever.
Ladies and gentlemen, we have an extraordinary nominee who is changing the landscape. If people like my mother are considering voting Democrat this time...words can't even describe. Senator Obama has put faith in us, and we cannot let him or our country down. There is too much at stake this election. We need to ignore the polls and work as if McCain is constantly up by 12.
