We must be clear and push the thought virus that this choice of a VP is John McCains first executive decision and that as a man who turns 72 years old today, he must step up to the plate and protect Americans with a choice that can actually step up if he were to win and die in office.
John McCain has had melanoma. Despite his long survival of seven years he is
he is at increased risk for melanoma and other skin cancers because of his medical history, fair skin and prolonged sun exposure at a young age — long before the wide use of sunscreen.
From that perspective, his first executive decision should have been to pick a running mate that could actually step in at a moment notice and make the kind of decisions that would be called for.
Now I wish no ill on Senator McCain, but the reality is that he must be looked at differently than a nominee in his 50's or 60's. As such the most important consideration a nominee in his circumstance is one that assures the country that were he to have a medical crisis or worse pass away, his replacement would be SUBSTANTIALLY QUALIFIED to assume his role as President so that our enemies would not be tempted to test us at a moment of crisis.
