Today Senator McCain picked his VP. Sarah Palin will be on the ticket.
We can see why:
She's a woman.
She's a mother of five.
Her first son is part of the troops (since last september 11th) and going to Iraq.
She's pro-life.
The thing is, her fifth child, Trig, was born with Down Synrome, which is a form of trisomy 21.
This makes her a hard candidate to attack on many issues.
Little Trig was born in april, and as far as we know he is doing well despite the disease is suffers of. I think I don't only speak for myself here if I say we wish him well and a life as healthy and happy as possible.
As a pro-life person, it makes perfect sense that Gov Palin decided to give birth to her son. We should totally respect her for that. This is certainly not an easy situation, especially when you already have four kids to take care of.
But here is my point. She was given the choice. Maybe she made her mind in a second. But she was given the choice.
This is what is important. This is what should be pointed out if, or should I say when, the issue of abortion is raised.
She should be asked if she would overturn Roe v Wade if she could. And then why if she answers yes. And then she should get this answer:
But you decided to keep your baby. You were given the choice. I'm sure you made it in a heartbeat and we totally respect it and we think it's tremendous. But you were given the choice. (if possible Hillary should say this...)
For all of you, French buffs, here is some material on the issue from France:
Abortion is not a very big issue anymore in France, but when it became legal in 1975, it was.
In 1971, 343 brave women signed a petition saying they had gotten an illegal abortion.
The text later was known as Le manifeste des 343 salopes (the 343 sluts manifesto) Yes, this is what they called themselves.
In French (exerpt):
« Un million de femmes se font avorter chaque année en France. Elles le font dans des conditions dangereuses en raison de la clandestinité à laquelle elles sont condamnées, alors que cette opération, pratiquée sous contrôle médical, est des plus simples. On fait le silence sur ces millions de femmes. Je déclare que je suis l'une d'elles. Je déclare avoir avorté. De même que nous réclamons le libre accès aux moyens anticonceptionnels, nous réclamons l'avortement libre. »
In English (my translation):
"A million women get an abotion each year in France. They do so undergo dangerous conditions because they are condemned to clandestinity while this operation, under proper medical control is simple. We stay silent about these millions of women. I declare I am one of them. I declare I have gotten an abortion. As well as we ask a free acces to birth control devices, we ask for the right to chose."
Among the 343 women who signed were, Simone de Beauvoir, Catherine Deneuve, Marguerite Duras, Jeanne Moreau.
