With all the Hoopla surrounding Hillary and Sarah, let us harken back to the 1970's when what was possible for this Nation. A woman arose from our midst, and declared herself a candidate for the Presidency of the United States, a woman named Shirley Anita St Hill Chisholm.
Shirley Chisholm was born in Brooklyn in 1924 of immigrant parents, was educated at Columbia where she earned her degree in Education. She was a teacher. In 1968, Shirley became the first African-American female to be elected to Congress after serving in the NY State Legislature for four years.
In 1972,she declared herself a candidate for the Office of the President, garnering 28 delegates.
She was a true pioneer for all women. as were the other women who ran for President. But it was Shirley, who truly cracked the ceiling
She led the way for Hillary and Sarah, and, it's telling that Mrs Palin doesn't even know the history of women in American politics.
She was a uniter - visiting George Wallace after he had been shot in an assassination attempt
from wikipedia:
Chisholm created controversy when she visited rival and ideological opposite George Wallace in the hospital soon after his shooting in May 1972, during the 1972 presidential primary campaign. Several years later, when Chisholm worked on a bill to give domestic workers the right to a minimum wage, Wallace helped gain votes of enough southern congressmen to push the legislation through the House
She worked tirelessly to improve the lives of all who came in contact with her.
We all owe Shirley Chisholm a debt for bring MLK's Dream closer to being fulfilled
update: I have been corrected: Ms. Chisholm garnered 152 delegates, and carried NJ in the Dem. Primary..Thank you, YoursTruly
