With Hurricane Gustav heading to New Orleans, will America step up?
As Hurricane Gustav heads straight towards New Orleans and New Orleans is evacuated, Americans have to ask themselves, are we prepared?
New Orleans was neglected during Hurricane Katrina. Has America learned its lesson? Will President Bush take steps to make sure that every person is evacuated and that the infrastructure is not destroyed?
Will the American people step up? With Hurricane Katrina many groups spent a few weeks in New Orleans as a service project, which was important, but that is not enough. A city was destroyed. Will the best teachers, social workers, politicians, and bureaucrats be willing to relocate to rebuild the infrastructure, or will they stay home like last time?
If New Orleans is destroyed again, I think that President Bush, along with the presidential nominees, should call on the men and women of America to help rebuild the city. With the incredibly high levels of unemployment nationally, this is the time to create a FDR Work Projects Administration to rebuild the infrastructure. Even in New Orleans is spared, the infrastructure of the United States is crumbing, and Americans need to invest in nation to continue to be a major player internationally. It is a sad state of affairs when Americans have to worry about whether or not their government, the strongest in the world, will be able to protect them and their way of life.
While I am praying that New Orleans is spared of this hurricane, it is my hope that if the worst should happen, we will learn from our mistakes. The American government and citizens will step in and shows that it values the lives of New Orleans residents as much as Iraqis. Similarly, I hope that the American people step up and show residents of New Orleans that we are one nation.
