Ok, we all know that McCain selected Sarah Palin on a last minute whim, thinking it might help him pick up a decent portion of those 18 million Hillary voters. We're all pretty confident that won't work out how he wants it to. What is amazing is how this decision is a continuation from McCain of a lifetime of flip flopping, pandering, and outright political cowardice that seems to have no end.
Remember, this is a guy who in 2000, at the age of 64, bowed to the pressure of the Confederate Flag waving idiots by voicing support for their efforts to get that symbol of hate and oppression flying on the State Capital. In a recurring theme, after it didn't help him win, McCain later admonished himself for going along- admitting his "ambition" got the best of him. This is a guy who also had his amazing "John the Baptist" moment in South Carolina, shocking the world with a stunning revelation that he was a Baptist, even though he has never been baptised.
As we see, John McCain will pretty much do or say anything to get elected. His humiliating loss to Bush in 2000 has left a serious chink in his armor. This is a beaten man, a desperate man, and nothing shows that desperation better than this last minute decision to select Sarah Palin, a complete novice. It is no secret he's trying to placate woman. It got me thinking though. What if Hillary had won the nomination? What if it was just as close, just as contested only Hillary had eeked it out? And what if, under those circumstances, some Barack fans voiced angry opposition to the outcome- for much the same reasons used by Hillary fans. Do you see where I'm going?
McCain is such a panderer, such an empty suit, such a desperate man, that I'm almost SURE he would have viewed the landscape and decided to pick an African American for VP. Yep, he would have found his black "soulmate" and tried to pick up some of their votes. Of course, since there is not one Republican member of congress who is African American, his choices would be limited, but I'm sure he would have used the same inadequate vetting system he used to choose Palin to come up with...you guessed it... Alan Keyes.
Just imagine a McCain/Keyes ticket. Keyes has it all. Right wing paranoia, homophobia, radical religious theocracy- all the things I'm sure Barack voters can't stand. This would have been just as clueless a pick as Palin, only funnier.
McCain/Keyes. Oh, what might have been.
