As I watch this convention, it has become increasingly bizarre to me that the GOP have offered absolutely nothing in the way of specifics as to what you get if you vote for them.

What is their plan?  Will McCain provide specifics as Obama did?  Will anyone attempt to empathize with voters' economic concerns?  What are they doing?

I suppose if Rick Davis is accurately representing their campaign's beliefs, and they truly believe this election is "not about the issues" then it makes sense to not address any of them.

But honestly, does anyone know why they haven't at least covered their ass with some kind of shout out to the insecurities of the middle class voter?  Nothing at all about health care?  I'm not saying this to attack them, the way Obama might in a town hall, but because I'm really very puzzled here.

Rove loved the attack as much as anyone, but he invented a whole host of phony policies for Bush (compassionate conservatism, faith based outreach, ownership society) and one actual one (Medicare Prescription Drug Benefits)to win the votes of pocketbook minded citizens.  Nothing so far from the GOP, and even if every speech from 6 PM till McSame knocks the ballons off his head is a laundry list of wonk-meat, it'll still be the most policy light convention ever.

Also, aren't they at all worried about attacking Washington, even as it is there party that has been in Washington?  Mitt Romney said the change we need is to replace the liberals with conservatives.  But the liberals were only in Congress for a year and a half.  So he wants to go back to 2005?  That's supposed to solve the problems?  It makes no sense at all.

I understand that the Republicans have now done a 180 and are re running the 2004 campaign.  (the 2000 campaign was actually fairly bland and substantive)  I understand they just want to drive Obama's negatives up by baiting the "silent majority."  But do they really think that, by itself, unaided by any other argument expect McCain's biography, is enough to win?

Is it?

I genuinely don't know and would love some insight on what to me looks like the strategy of a psychopath.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

  •  Shocked? Why would you be shocked? They're (5+ / 0-)

Republicans!  Their policies suck, as the whole country can see.

Their campaign will be 100% based on AVOIDING a discussion of their policies.  It's their only hope.

    Hate and fear.

They played fear to death for the last seven years and nobody is buying fear anymore, so this year they're pushing hate.

  •  Scare tactics has always worked. (0+ / 0-)

Scaring the voters to act and act now or else works.  If the Dems don't go along, they are not patriotic.  Going into Iraq should have been enough, but they have an answer that cannot be defended in that our country has not been invaded.  The surge they say has worked, but you cannot prove that it would be the same without the surge. They are doing it will drilling now. They want everybody to act now and we are in a position that we cannot prove that we know is wrong.
They have right wing talk radio and Fox to drive these issues for them.

  •  Hey (0+ / 0-)

Are you afraid? How about scared? If so, then there is your policy talk. If you aren't than you are probably an elitist and should go back to eating arugula.

In a seriousness, this convention is not about the American people and why they should vote for the Republicans. Its a referendum on the Democratic party. If you can slam them and Obama, then you win, in their opinion. If reminds me of that quote from "Thank you for smoking:"

Son: You didn't prove that you were right.
Dad: I didn't have to, I proved that your were wrong.

haven't noticed either... oh, wait, no I'm not.  We need a commercial with a tally of the times they mentioned the economy, Iraq, Afganistan, torture, etc during the week

  •  No, really (0+ / 0-)

It is shocking that the GOP isn't offering ANYTHING. We all know they don't hesitate to lie. You'd think they make up something.

A free turkey at Thanksgiving, a lump of coal in our stocking. SOMETHING.

  •  You're not alone (0+ / 0-)

NONE of this makes any sense to me either, but I hear people cheering for them and I keep reminding myself that Bush wasn't just elected once but TWICE.  So maybe what they're doing works.  Let's hope it's not for the majority of the population.

What I found confusing....McCain was competitive with Obama when it came to independent voters.  What happened???  Did he give up on them to rally his base?
