If you watched John McCain give the most important speech of his life, you probably wondered about the building shown on the backdrop behind him:
According to Josh Marshall of Talking Points Memo, the building is the Walter Reed -- but not the one you're probably thinking of.
The image behind McCain is Walter Reed Middle School (WRMS) in North Hollywood, California. Here's a picture of WRMS, taken from its homepage:
According to its Wikipedia entry, WRMS was formerly known as North Hollywood Junior High School. Located next to Studio City, WRMS has served as the setting for many television shows. It's considered one of the most popular film locales in Los Angeles. It is not, however, Walter Reed Army Medical Center, which looks like this:
Did McCain's staff manage to screw up the backdrop to his speech? Is it really possible that instead of showing the hospital where America's wounded veterans come home to recuperate, they showed a movie set? Rather than a reminder of McCain's POW past, did they put him in a venue more appropriate to his celebrity status of the present? If so, it's either the biggest screw up, or the most colossal practical joke, in modern American political history.
Either way, it's pure gold.
