So, when I was looking at the schedule for the so-called "Big Three" Sunday shows, This Week with George Stephanopoulos, Face the Nation, and Meet the Press, I noticed there were a lot of ticket members on. Joe Biden was gonna be on MTP; Barack Obama on This Week, and John McCain on Face the Nation. There was one ticketmate, however, that was curiously absent: Sarah Palin.

Whatwhatwhat?

More below the fold.

http://thinkprogress.org/...

While I was getting dressed this morning, I had Morning Joe rambling on in the background. I usually don't pay much attention to what they're saying--Joe's a little too Republican for me--but this blew me the hell AWAY. NOT going to appear on any of the Sunday talk shows? NOT going to have ANY interview with anyone--not Brian Williams, not Charlie Gibson, not Katie Couric, not Diane Sawyer, not Tom Brokaw, not Barbara Walters, not ANYONE? Don't you kind of HAVE to go on Meet the Press as this point?

But that's not all. According to THIS http://www.politico.com/... article, she's not going to even CAMPAIGN with McCain much. So she's avoiding the famous McCain town hall meetings as well? Praise be to Jesus, what the hell? Does Sarah Palin REALLY expect us to elect her to the second most powerful office in the country if she can't even give us a goddam interview?

I shudder to think what she's going to do with the VP debate. Turn it down? I mean, she's gonna have to answer some real goddam questions, won't she? Or will she pull a Saddleback and see them beforehand like an 8th grader cheating on the midterm? This is ridiculous. Just how stupid does John McCain think we are?

More than that, I honestly don't understand, from the McCain campaign's viewpoint, how this helps. I mean, for one, since both Obama and Biden are campaigning at the same time, they can be in two places at once (as they were today) and talk to far more voters than one candidate can (especially since Biden alone can get 2,000 people when McCain musters 1,000 on a good day. Second, Palin is really the only excitement the ticket has. McCain got 600 people at his events when it was just him. When Sarah Palin was there as well, they got 15,000. I mean, why would you pick an exciting VP that revs up your base and then just kick her out to go hang out up in Ah-las-kur for the next two months? Doesn't that really shoot your whole campaign in its collective foot?

Well, they've done dumber things. See: John McCain RNC acceptance speech. Green background much? LOL.

Oh, and good news: Even with polls factoring in Palin's speech, McCain's gotten only a three-point or so bounce (Obama got an about 8% bounce by comparison) and though the polls don't factor in McCain's speech, pretty much everyone agrees that if a speech is gonna win over voters, it's gonna be Palins. They've even said McCain's speech could be a sort of wet blanket on the "Palin sizzle." Oh well. Better for us.

But getting back to my point: WHY WILL THIS LADY NOT DO A GODDAM INTERVIEW? Shit.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

They are keeping her under raps.  She has her stock speech and spends the rest of the time prepping for that one debate.

I'm actually nervous: she could be smarter than she is allowed to hear.

Sadly, if they get soft pitch manipulation a la stephanopolous, it may be rigged.

The people mag. article is such a whitewash and gives them more pages than they've given Senator Obama or Joe Biden.

it's in the back of EVERYONE's mind that McCain will croke in office and his veep may be called up on to take his place, but they aren't trotting Palin out as a potential president.

They're trotting her out as a cheerleader and not much more.   If people actually sat down and THOUGHT about her as POTUS, they wouldn't be nearly as enamored by her I don't care what they're staying now. (except the religious right of course, they love her.  But they think all you need to be president is to be right on THEIR issues).

The Republican base that needs firing up knows she's a fascist on abortion and global warming and abstinence so they don't need reminding of that. But the independent voters don't know: they just see a "hockey mom" (whatever that is) with a nice rack and they don't know she's to the right of Cheney and Rumsfeld. As long as they don't know that, the better.

All Sarah wants is to be elected to be first in line to have executive power over the government of this democracy.  Yes, this woman would be the "decider" on issues that effect our personal lives and the existence of our country.

She expects to be given this awesome authority based on her delivery of a speech written by an anonymous writer, representing thoughts that are the writers, or her party's, but not necessarily her's.

She must subject herself to what anyone who wants a position, from clerk to executive, accepts, a probing interview by her employers.  In this case, that's us, the people of America.

here you have a VP pick out of nowhere, deep deep right field. no one knows anything about her. and you have the Presidential candidate that is 72 years old. the oldest candidate ever.
so instead of rushing her through the intro drills so people can know her at least a little you keep her in a bubble. from which she has a cat fight with herself. if this makes any sense then I would believe McCain would give the most important speech of his life in front of the green grass of a LA High School.

McSame's team is horrified by what he's done picking Palin; they're suffering a world-class case of buyer's remorse after seeing all the skeletons oozing out of her closet, and seeing her in person.

I suspect that Palin is absolutely God-awful in a fluid debate situation— petulant, snarling, wrong on the facts and all resentment-in-high-heels. I believe that after seeing her in the flesh and experiencing her 'talents' in person, McSame's team is scrambling to keep her buried in Dick Cheney's bat-cave 'till after the election. She's that bad.

Thanks for giving me the opportunity to rant.  Dems should NAIL them both to the wall for this.  They want her to be possibly the f*cking POTUS, and the American people do not have the opportunity to ask her one single question???

If you can't handle the press, you can't handle being POTUS.  It's obvious to everyone that they know she will say something campaign-ending, so they can't trust her out there.  So why in the HELL did they nominate her then??

Not to put everything in sports terms, but what I think they are trying to do is limit the depth of the "scouting" report that Biden's team can put together on her for his debate prep.  Palin's team has lots to develop strategy on, but if they keep her a mystery, it limits his ability to develop an effect game plan for the debate.  While we feel he's nimble enough, without having a full briefing book of oppo research and understanding deeply her style of debate....as I've heard say, Biden will be playing checkers while she's playing chess.

  •  Talk about an insult to women (0+ / 0-)

It's an insult to women that the female candidate for vice-president is being shielded like a southern belle from what every other candidate takes for granted.

It says something about her that she's willing to accept this charade.  Can you imagine Hillary Clinton hiding behind anybody for any reason?

The Republicans have taken a corrupt, lying, despotic politician and are busy creating the illusion that she is ready to be president of the United States.

I'm sorry but this is about sex, and I don't mean gender.  Sex sells.  Can you imagine the reaction to her background if she were ugly?  I've had a number of men tell me they are voting for her because "she's hot!"

This is what America has come to?  American Idol is in fact America itself?

  •  Because she's been on the ticket a week. (0+ / 0-)

She had to get ready for 'the speech of her life', deal with announcing her daughter's pregnancy (probably a week earlier than planned) and has been kind of busy.

She has to be brought up to speed on the McCain programs before going on television representing them.  That would be true of anyone.  Biden's been on the ticket a bit longer and had already run against Obama so would presumably know some of his positions to start with.

Since there is so much 'gotcha' going on, you need to be on the same page before you go on.

I expect her to do stump speaches in 'small town' areas, do light interviews such as 'personality' tv shows and work her way up to it.  Shis now only a month away from the debate and that will take time, too.

I doubt the Republican's want to plan her schedule in a way optimized to encourage blunders.

  •  Quite Simple The Answer (0+ / 0-)

You ask "Why will this lady not do a goddam interview?"

    Really simple.

Right now they are afraid she will screw it up.

Not ready with pat answers to all the "gotcha" moments she would face from reporters asking pointed questions. Pointed questions that would bring out not just her lack of knowledge on national and international affairs.
Worse, those questions could actually seek answers to her lies, her evasions, her gloss of past actions.

Right now she is afraid she will screw it up - because she knows she isn't ready.

The press should (along with sites like dKos) keep up a steady drum beat on her reluctance to answer the questions so many want answered. "If she can't answer to the Press, how do we know if she will answer to the People?"
Make it point that is a cause for effective and presumptive disqualification of her candidacy.

For it is our right to know the answers as to how she reconciles her statements and actions. It is our right to know where she stands on issues, and how she thinks on her feet, extemporaneously.

    ==============================================
Lastly, I think this is a sham evasion, one that will last until they can get her in front of friendly reporters, in a comfortable and controlled setting. Then, any further requests for face-to-face questioning will be met with a flat refusal - delivered with an assurance that the now "well prepped" elephant Veep candidate has done all she needs to do.

Think of it as getting a Veep degree from Phoenix University, online.

  •  Baby to care for and wedding to plan (0+ / 0-)

Don't forget this is a family that seems to thrive on drama. Her son is about to leave for (probably) Iraq; her daughter may (or may not?) be getting married; and the baby is probably still nursing. Oh, and she has a big executive position to carry out. So there are plenty of reasons why she can't just go flying around the country for the next six months, right?

And face it, the gender thing is real. Barack can leave his girls with Michelle and grandma, and no one faults him for it. (Michelle as I understand it limits her trips so she's only away one overnight a week.) A mom with very young children, especially one who's campaigning as a mom to appeal to other moms who hold fairly traditional views, is walking a very fine line.

  •  GOP logic? (0+ / 0-)

Hey, if she was good enough for McCain to select her as his running mate after meeting her only once, she must be good enough for the American electorate to vote for her after one speech.

  •  In "The Greatest Man in the World" by James (0+ / 0-)

Thurber, Jack (Pal) Smurch, after flying a rickety monoplane nonstop around the world in 1935, was spirited away after landing without speaking a word to the press. The papers had followed his heroic flight in great detail, but omitted his life story, which was simply too awful to print.

What does this have to do with hiding "the greatest woman in the world," Governor Sarah Palin?

    Everything.
