I know so many are in panic mode here. I know you think it's happening all over again, except that it is different this time. We have ALL the numbers in our favor as far as the right track /wrong track. Above all we have the one thing that makes me most confident:
Barack Obama.
Barack Obama is the most remarkable political figure to emerge from the United States in a long time. I remember vividly last year in October being quite impatient with the Obama campaign as we headed for the home stretch in Iowa--and yet the Senator re-tooled slightly and we got the JJ dinner speech in Iowa in early November, and the rest is history.
We all wanted him to eviscerate Mrs. Clinton this Spring and yet he resisted and won the primary battle on his terms. A few weeks ago, we were in panic mode after Saddleback,
and then came his incredible convention speech which cannot be diminished even in light of McCain's hysterical choice of Palin.
Now this speaking-in-tongues, anti-gay, anti-choice, anti-science, lying creationist whose strict morals are for others to live by and not her family is making us all nervous. Yet, the Senator is again serene and almost Zen in his confidence in victory. Every other minute I want him to tear these criminals to shreds and yet, he DOES know best. They have numbers they are working with. Barack Obama did not defeat the Clinton machine in order to lose to an out of touch and dangerous old man.
We know that Senator Obama has to be so many fucking things his opponents don't. There is a double standard you see folks: our candidate can't have teenage daughters getting pregnant, he can't have a drug-addicted embezzeling wife wearing $300,000 outfits, he can't wave his vastly superior academic credentials in their face, he has to turn his brilliant mother (a wonderful adventurous woman with a phd) into a welfare food-stamp mom. This is the price he has to pay so that he can relate to the vast swaths of insecure Americans. I'm not talking economically insecure, I'm talking those Americans who distrust reason, difference, and anything that challenges their limited world-view.
After Obama wins, I will gloat, I will torment the red states and the red-staters amongst us in blue America. I will say that this time their weren't enough of you backward, stupid
insecure people. Obama will win gracefully and forgive all, but I won't. And I will make sure the losers feel that horrible feeling we all felt in '00 and '04.
