Fred Thompson is probably the most anticlimatic political figure in the last fifty or so years. He was heralded as being the candidate who would be the last best hope for the Republican party this year. Well, after realizing how terrible of a candidate he was, the public (rightly) thought it best to entrust someone else with the Republican nomination.
Not that this has actually registered with John McCain yet.
CBS News: From the Road
You see, today Fred Thompson said some amazing things while campaigning in Virginia with John McCain. Here are some choice tidbits (link above if you are interested):
"Frankly, I think Rev. [Jeremiah] Wright was correct when he says he's just doing what politicians do," Thompson said about Obama. "That's not the kind of change this country needs."
Yes, Fred. Because John McCain has been running an honorable campaign. So honorable, in fact, he hasn't had his surrogates bring up the pastor of a church that Obama left several months ago.
This in and of itself was pretty stupid of Fred, but when you're on a roll, you're on a roll:
"Sarah Palin is the most remarkable success story in the history of American politics," Thompson said
This is where I started to laugh. Because being a skinny black kid with a funny sounding name and a right-wing smear machine working against him that has tried to cast him as a Muslim, an elitist, too-black, not-black-enough, sexist, radical, tax-and-spend-liberal just pales in comparison with a former mayor in a town of less than 9000 people, and a governor of the 47th most populous state in the union.
Here's my personal favorite part, though. CBS actually saw right through Thompson's claims:
which would seem to put her ahead of George Washington (winning the Revolutionary War, becoming the country’s first president), Abraham Lincoln (overcoming poverty, ending slavery, holding the union together), and Franklin Roosevelt (overcoming polio, defeating the Nazis, being elected president four times).
I hate to say this because it's so cliche, but...
OWNED!
