This will be a very short diary-and no, I won't delete or repost it as a comment, because the exact truth and scope of this story needs to be gotten out.
According to This ABC report Sarah Palin did in fact try to censor books in the Wasilla library. should set the record straight.
Its interesting because the censorship story is rapidly achieving status as one of the "smears against" Sarah Palin, as opposed to one of the true stories. Personally, I think this video speaks for itself, but below the fold I justify this diary.
What seems to be going on is that some stories (like this one) get overstated or slightly exaggerated. In this case, the internet rumor seems to be that Sarah Palin actually did censor the books and actually had the books removed. Then someone (the McCain campaign or a news outlet) says she never had the books removed. It's literally true but immensely misleading.
Suppose I hear you beat Mr. Mustard to death with a lead pipe. You say "I never beat Mr. Mustard to death with a lead pipe" and point down the strett to Mr. Mustard out mowing his lawn. But as it turns out, what really happened is that several years ago you broke Mr. Mustard's legs with a baseball bat. So the stories about you are exaggerated but you skate because of an initial misunderstanding or overstatement.
And this seems to be what actually happened. Sarah Palin has a meeting with the Librarian. She asks the librarian "rhetorically" how would you respond to a request to remove books x, y and z. There is no actual "list" but the question takes place amidst ongoing efforts and complaints by Sarah's church against specific books. The librarian is then fired, later reinstated and then quits two years later. Now, this is in itself pretty damning.
Let's make sure that this story, in its accurate form does get out there and does get spread-because it is pretty bone chilling.
This story forms part of my ongoing effort to fully document the Sarah Palin scandals and get the word out in a way that can stand up to scrutiny.
