Sam Stein on Huffpost does the obvious and rolls out McCain's statements when he was running for the R nomination, against ex-Govenor Romney and ex-mayor Giuliani.
"I have had a strong and a long relationship on national security, I've been involved in every national crisis that this nation has faced since Beirut, I understand the issues, I understand and appreciate the enormity of the challenge we face from radical Islamic extremism.
"I am prepared. I am prepared. I need no on-the-job training. I wasn't a mayor for a short period of time. I wasn't a governor for a short period of time."
Italics added
Oh, so PROUD to have never been tainted with a gubenatorial or mayoral position! It's not just that he hasn't had it, he's glad he's never had it.

The point isn't whether McCain was correct then as opposed to now, when he has a red meat, nutterbutter conservative running mate to defend: we've moved way past which McCain is the liar and which is the "real" McCain. The point is two fold:
a) McCain says anything that will help him win, being both a liar and ambitious. He doesn't care about being correct, and therefore neither should we. He's a liar who will dump all the nicey nice promises and assertions he's making now as soon as he's past the post and can being his first and last term getting even with americans for not kissing his ass.
b) The length of the resume doesn't matter when the person has ALREADY built a track record of being right. Obama was right on the Iraq war, right on talking to Iran, right on attacking OBL in Pakistan, so much so that even Bush is copying his policy positions. Palin and McCain were, are wrong. Obama is the instance of a nice surprise from inexperience, McCain is the instance of a nasty surprise despite having all the time in the world to get smarter, and Palin is as shallow as you would expect.
hat tip to chicagolights for the vid posted in the FP article. It shows how McCain gets away with lying: he's so boring, nobody was even listening and therefore can't call him on it.
