I was shocked to see how many people here were gleeful about Sarah Palin not knowing what "the Bush Doctrine" is. Do you really think that people care about that?
My wife, a 32 year-old graduate of UCLA who runs a business, reads the New Yorker, and follows politics, did not know what it was when I asked her.
My parents, hippies who lived in the SF bay area for a long time and follow politics very carefully, also don't know.
To be sure, all of us know about the whole pre-emptive strike policy, but to get so excited about Palin not knowing that phrase- well, it's a very wonky response, and you're setting yourself up for disappointment.
What we needed in this interview was an actual laundry list of issues being addressed. I haven't seen that yet.
Making this race about things like this will be seen as elitist and condescending by a large part of the population. I hope the Obama team knows better.
(And yes, I do think that Palin is an idiot, but most Americans don't, and won't, so that angle maybe ain't so great)
