This will be short, but I will update throughout the next couple of days as needed for those who may be evacuating with pets, or advising people doing the same.
If you can afford to board your dog here are at least three area kennels that were ready to accept Gustav evacuees, so I'm assuming they would accept Ike evacuees as well. However, you will want to call regardless:
DogBoy's Dog Ranch, Dog Camp, Onion Creek Kennels. The Pet Care Services Association (formerly known as the American Boarding Kennel Association) is an excellent resource for further referrals.
I can give you the most information about DogBoy's, since I work there. We are relaxing our usual requirements for new boarders to be evaluated (most of the time, dogs are outside in playgroups at our facility) and for proof of vaccination. We are still requiring all dogs over 6 months of age to be spayed and neutered and unfortunately we cannot accept pit bulls or pit bull mixes. We also do not accept cats.
DogCamp is run along similar lines as DogBoys, and if you're not too bedraggled or stressed out, it is down the road from The Salt Lick, where you can get some excellent barbecue. I've met the woman who runs Onion Creek Kennels, and seen some of the facility; it is a nice place and she is very sweet (she breeds Welsh Corgis and hosts Corgi Fest every year). Onion Creek, and I believe DogCamp, will also board cats.
For Hurricane Gustav, FEMA was allowing evacuees to bring pets if prior arrangements were made. I will try to confirm this as soon as I can. In the meantime, I urge everyone in the storm's direct path to make their safety the first priority.
