How cynical and corrupt is the Ohio GOP anyway? It sometimes seems like its well of hypocrisy,. duplicity, phony indignation and sheer loathing of open government and fair elections is bottomless.

Jeff Coryell's OhioDailyBlog.com, one of the best political blogs in the state, has a story posted you should read.

Some of you may have been following the Ohio Republican Party's threats and whining about a week-long window in which citizens may go down to their local boards of election, and register and vote at the same time. This is due to an overlap in the registration period which ends October 6, and the start of early voting, September 30. It's open to Republican, Democrat and independent alike, and it's perfectly legal, thanks to the Republican-dominated legislature that passed the laws creating it, and the signature of former Republican Governor Bob "The Inviisble" Taft.
But the state GOP is on a campaign. It desperately wants two things. One is that it needs to keep down the Democratic vote total in Ohio if it is to have any chance of handing the state to McCain. Don't be fooled by pools; they know they are almost certain to lose this one, and without a 'friendly" secretary of state like Ken Blackwell anymore, willing to tilt the playing field in their favour, they are casting about anxiously for ways to prevent Democrats from voting.
The other is that they are looking ahead to 2010. They know that if the current lineup of office holders, up for election in 2010, stays, they lose their majority on the apportionment board and the opportunity to continue the state's current gerrymandering, which has led to a lopsided and unrepresentative Republican majority, both in our congressional delegation and our general assemble. The two key offices are governor, which they know is a long short, and secretary of state. So they have targeted our secretary of state, Jennifer Brunner, who has been bending over backwards to assure fair elections for ALL voters. She just directed a fix to a flawed set of absentee ballot applications sent by the McCain campaign mainly to Republicans that would potential have disenfrancished THEM. The state GOP even managed to attack her for this: they insisted that instead, she should have broken the law, or overlooked it, to benefit them.
So now they have sued, which is laughable. Whether they get anywhere with this absurd lawsuit is hard to tell. The law is clear, and the Republicans passed the law. However, one can't put it past ouyr corrupt, 100% Republican state supreme court to simply say that the law is unconsitutional, although I can't imagine how they could justify this.
In any case, the state Republicans have shown once again that they are a bunch of whiny, crybabies (why we call deputy (and future) chairman Kevin DeWine Kevvy DeWhiny. He is de whiniest. They have also shown their contempt for the fair, free, open elections that we put Jennifer in office to create.
One more thing. A favour for me. If you want to help us give the finger to the ohio GOP, make a small donation to Jennifer for her 2010 campaign:
