How sleazy do you have to be before Karl Rove calls you a liar?
McCain has achieved the seemingly impossible. Even Karl Rove is saying he went "one step too far" with his latest attacks on Obama.
Isn't that a bit like Exxon saying you don't care enough about the environment, or McDonald's saying that your food isn't healthy enough?
Yes, McCain has sunk to a new low.
From CNN:
"McCain has gone in some of his ads -- similarly gone one step too far," he told Fox News, "and sort of attributing to Obama things that are, you know, beyond the '100 percent truth' test."
Beyond the "100 percent truth test"? Wow. A great new euphemism for lying. I'll have to remember that if the IRS ever calls me in for an audit. "No sir, I didn't lie on my taxes. My return just doesn't pass the 100 percent truth test."
The Obama campaign was quick to respond:
"In case anyone was still wondering whether John McCain is running the sleaziest, most dishonest campaign in history, today Karl Rove -- the man who held the previous record -- said McCain's ads have gone too far," said campaign spokesman Tommy Vietor, in a statement sent to reporters minutes after Rove's on-air comments. Rove masterminded both of President Bush's successful White House bids.
Furthermore, the Obama campaign has accused McCain of "cynically running the sleaziest and least honorable campaign in modern presidential campaign history."
I hope that quote from Rove shows up in an attack ad from Obama. It's clear that Obama's gloves are off, and he's hitting them back quickly and forcefully.
Go Obama!
