Like many of you, I pay close attention to the polls, while also trying to maintain a healthy distance from them. They are always temporary -- that goes without saying. However, as Steven Colbert reminds us, "They are...a collection of statistics that reflect what people are thinking in reality."
Which leads me to a simple question: why are we not clobbering Fossil/Hick by a ridiculous margin by now?
The fact that this is such a close race really bothers me. What else does Obama need to do to convince people? And if he can't do, who can?
That so many people seem so taken by Palin -- my mother, for example -- makes me think about the famous definition of insanity: doing the same thing while expecting a different result. People are going to vote for her (and McCain, by extension), thinking that she will somehow make their lives better. But she is no better than McCain; she is no better than Bush -- in fact, she might be worse.
I do see that the polls are stabilizing, and that Obama 's numbers are slowing returning to where they were, but I just dread seeing some fancy graphic in November with "McCain declared winner!" on it.
Bottom line: I hope people wise up, and I hope Obama and Biden can help them to do so.
