The right is attempting to impose their own apologetics on the election process for a short-coming that McCain has admitted to in the past: Computer Illiteracy.
They claim he is Computer Illiterate because of war injuries; the truth is that he is computer illiterate. Period.
Here are some things that you can consider to counter their fraudulent claims:
First of all, here is a direct link to the McCain illiteracy video:
Here is the McCain exact quote from the video:
"I am an illiterate who has to rely on my wife for any assistance she can give."
Note absence of the words, "war injuries," in the quote.
Next, lets take a look at a video where McCain is using the phone:
At the 43 second mark, you can clearly see a staffer handing him the phone so he can talk on it. Granted, he may have injuries that prevent the use of his fingers for deft tasks, but does that really preclude hitting one button on a phone, or getting a product to work around such a disability?
And finally, more damning in my opinion, is his admission that he is learning to use the computer on his own from a New York Times interview:
Q: But do you go on line for yourself?
Mr. McCain: They go on for me. I am learning to get online myself, and I will have that down fairly soon, getting on myself. I don’t expect to be a great communicator, I don’t expect to set up my own blog, but I am becoming computer literate to the point where I can get the information that I need – including going to my daughter’s blog first, before anything else.
Q: Do you use a blackberry or email?
Mr. McCain: No
Mark Salter: He uses a BlackBerry, just ours.
Mr. McCain: I use the Blackberry, but I don’t e-mail, I’ve never felt the particular need to e-mail. I read e-mails all the time, but the communications that I have with my friends and staff are oral and done with my cell phone. I have the luxury of being in contact with them literally all the time. We now have a phone on the plane that is usable on the plane, so I just never really felt a need to do it. But I do – could I just say, really – I understand the impact of blogs on American politics today and political campaigns. I understand that. And I understand that something appears on one blog, can ricochet all around and get into the evening news, the front page of The New York Times. So, I do pay attention to the blogs. And I am not in any way unappreciative of the impact that they have on entire campaigns and world opinion.
New York Times McCain Interview Transcript
Clearly there is no mention of injuries impeding his ability to use the computer.
So, my point in this diary was NOT to attack those who are disabled, or to tarnish John McCain's war service record. Instead, I wanted to show you all that claims that his computer illiteracy was derived from war injuries sustained from his military service are fraudulent. In fact, John McCain is just, simply, computer illiterate.
Since this is my first diary here on Kos, I'd like to apologize in advance for breaking the rules or being ignorant of customs/traditions in diary submission. Thank you for letting me speak my peace!
