I have been watching all the financial news lately and noticed that Oil has now dropped to $90 a barrel. I wonder how this matters for messaging between the 2 campaigns and if it helps or hurts our side.
On 1 hand the repugs message of "Drill here, Drill now" has to be hurt. Voters can't possibly be as excited with the drill message as Oil prices go down. So to that end, it has to somewhat take away that line of attack.
On the other hand our message of "alternatives" can't be helped either. Who would want to switch to something new like Wind or other green techs when oil is cheap? As Oil dives in price, it instantly makes alternatives less attractive. How do we pitch a message to the masses with oil getting cheaper? Personally, it was much more effective when Oil was expensive to pitch the idea of massive investment in alternatives for our future. What I am saying is that pitching this idea simply because of global warming seems like it will fail. Pitching with the kicker that Oil is expensive kinda "made" the sale.
In this environment I personally feel the entire Oil vs. alternative arguement will just die. I personally feel that we must see higher Oil prices to stoke the debate again.
As Oil falls in price, the chances of an energy debate or a shift to greener energy dies in my opinion. I think it is sad overall.
What is your take on the situation?
