This is going to be short and to the point; but here's yet another and highly relevant instance of McCain either lying, being oblivious, or some combination of the two.
McCain seems to have trouble accurately defining his own Senate career, while he deliberately distorts Obama's. Not long ago, McCain claimed that Obama has never convened a Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing on Afghanistan. Of course, the problem is that Obama chairs the European Affairs Subcommittee, and he did attend a hearing on Afghanistan; while McCain didn't even bother to show up for the Armed Services Committee meeting on Afghanistan.
Now McCain claims that he is prepared to handle the current meltdown in the financial sector owing to the fact that he chaired the Commerce Committee, which "oversights every part of our economy."
According to the Washington Post, the areas covered by the Commerce Committee are limited to the following:
- Coast Guard.
- Coastal zone management.
- Communications.
- Highway safety.
- Inland waterways, except construction.
- Interstate commerce.
- Marine and ocean navigation, safety, and transportation, including
navigational aspects of deepwater ports.
- Marine fisheries.
- Merchant marine and navigation.
- Nonmilitary aeronautical and space sciences.
- Oceans, weather, and atmospheric activities.
- Panama Canal and interoceanic canals generally, except as provided
in subparagraph (c).
- Regulation of consumer products and services, including testing
related to toxic substances, other than pesticides, and except for
credit, financial services, and housing.
- Regulation of interstate common carriers, including railroads,
buses, trucks, vessels, pipelines, and civil aviation.
- Science, engineering, and technology research and development and
policy.
- Sports.
- Standards and measurement.
- Transportation.
- Transportation and commerce aspects of Outer Continental Shelf
lands.
The experience that McCain is claiming is instead within the purview of the Senate Banking Committee.
So what is it that McCain actually does at these meetings? It doesn't seem as though he can answer that, and we're supposed to believe that he can fix the economy?
