So I read the news today and it turns out not only am I going to own an insurance company, but I'm going to be a money market mutual fund manager, too.
At which point I said "Enough!"
OK, so the Republicans got us into this mess by deregulating the finance industry. I also acknowledge the government has to do something or it could be much worse.
But why do I have to foot the bill? I'm not the one who made record profits in the intervening years. I'm not the one who is walking away with a $21 million golden parachute for driving my company in the ground.
Why aren't those who benefited the most from this scheme (the CEOs, the wealthy investors, etc) paying for the bailout? Why am I asked to pony up my part of $1 trillion when the wealthy are not paying their fair share in taxes, and McCain is proposing even reducing their financial responsibility to government even further?
It seems very simple - link failed Republican policies that led to this mess with making the very people who benefited from it most pay to clean it up. A "financial system rescue tax" on the wealthiest 1% of the country sounds good to me.
