I live in the small town of Manitou Springs, Colorado with a population of roughly 6000 people. It is right next to Colordao Springs which as you probably know is a bastion of conservatism, sometimes called the Vatican of Evangelism. El Paso county is conisidered to be one of the most Republican counties in the country and in spite of about 50% of the population making a living off of people's taxes, you won't find a more rabid antitax base anywhere.
So what about it? (See below)
Manitou Springs is right next to Colorado Springs....... about 1,000 feet straight uphill. It is a liberal enclave surrounded by hostile forces, but we believe we can make a difference in the upcoming election. We know that we'll never carry El Paso County for the Democrats, but if we can punch enough holes in their victory margin, maybe our neighbors up in Denver can carry the state for Obama. I have read twice now where if McCain loses Colorado his chances of winning the electoral college drop to about 5%.
Anyway. the point of this is to let you know what is going on here tomorrow in the hopes that other small towns or communities across the country might do the same thing.
There will be an Obama rally in our local park tomorrow. There will be live music and plenty of food as well as voter registration booths and donation centers. We don't know exactly what to expect since there will be no Obama to speak, but I will go out on a limb and guesstimate that there will be over 1000 people there through the course of the day if I know Mantiou.
We're hungry for a win here in Colorado and we hope that people across the stae and country will do their part in making this happen. I wish we could do more, but the longest journeys start with one step and we only take one step at a time along the way...... but finally we arrive with one last step.
If you ever make it out to Colorado, stop by Manitou and say hello.
