I think it is pretty clear that the overwhelming consensus in the blogosphere, even among libertarians and some right-wingers, is that Paulson's bailout plan is nothing more than a financial coup-de-tat and must be stopped.
And I think many in the left side of the blogosphere are starting to ask themselves, why hasn't Obama come out strongly against the "no oversight" provisions of this plan? What is he waiting for?
Well, here's something to really scare you: what if John McCain beats Obama to the punch and issues his own, "no blank check" statement?
It would be like Nixon going to China. It would be explosive. And it would very likely guarantee McCain a victory in the Fall.
Because, if Obama were to hesitate on this and allow McCain to steal the thunder, I might have to seriously consider voting for McCain.
Yes, it really is that scary a possibility.
So here's what we need to do: we need to overwhelm the Obama campaign with warnings of this possibility. Because as much as they may be uncomfortable with the idea of looking like they are blocking the saving of the financial sector, it will be much much worse if McCain gets there first.
So, call, write, blog, whatever it takes. We need to get the message to Sen. Obama: don't let McCain beat you on this issue. Be bold. Be a leader.
