Alaska needs to investigate the so-called "troopergate" allegations to get to the bottom of the case. Did Sarah Palin try to use her office to take care of a personal matter? I have nothing to add about the case because all we have right now are allegations and more facts need to come out.
However, these allegations sound similar to the outrageous firing of US Attorneys after the 2006 campaign. This was a case where competent US Attorneys were fired for seemingly political reasons. The evidence was quite damning, but obviously the AG is not going to prosecute and Karl Rove and Harriet Miers are protected by executive privilege, so right now it appears that the whole smarmy mess will pass without anyone being held accountable.
There is no question that the use of executive privilege in this case has been used to protect members of the Administration including Bush himself. It is this abuse of authority that makes people 1) want a substantive change after the Bush Administration; 2) believe that we have a monarchy and that the President is actually above the law; 3) love our country and fear our government.
Enter Sarah Palin. She goes after a pretty decent law and order guy, Walt Monegan, who refused to fire Mike Wooten, Sarah Palin’s former brother-in-law. Now she refuses to cooperate with investigators and her husband, Todd, will not honor a lawful subpoena issued by the Alaska Legislature.
It’s pretty hard to look at how she is handling troopergate and imagining her handling the US Attorney scandal any differently than Bush is. She seems like an Alaska version of Monica Goodling. I’m just waiting for her to say, "Maybe I crossed the line. But I didn’t mean to."
