The continuing disaster in Texas is taking its toll on resources. Residents in a 200 mile wide swath of the state are struggling to stabilize. Nearly a million people have lived more than a week without electricity. Hundreds of thousands are still waiting for running water. The mosquitos are hatching and likely to start carrying off small children.
But most of all, for hard working people who live paycheck to paycheck who have not been called back to work, and those who lost everything, FOOD is the pressing issue.
Lucky for us, the Texas Food Banks are able to leverage any $1 donation into $5 of food. And you can donate here.
All Texas food banks, while already stretched thin by the economy, are pitching in to send food to the Ike disaster area. This will be a crises for at least the next 30 days.
Politically speaking, we are a little more than one week from the registration deadline in Texas. The displaced are not thinking about voting because they are focused on restoring some sense of normalcy. There is wide spread confusion about addresses that were destroyed and voting rights.
The effected are busy trying to be patient, cleaning debris, and scrambling to find edible, affordable food. A little food could go a long way toward getting people to the polls in the future.
There are certainly other needs in the area I do not mean to disregard.
Thanks in advance for helping out. And a big hug to everyone already working to bring relief to the area.
