This is just a quick line on what is about to happen in the State of Georgia this evening.
In 1989, Troy Anthony Davis was convicted of murdering a police officer in Savannah, Georgia, and was sentenced to death. He is scheduled to be executed tonight, but the evidence that was used to convict him turns out to be false.
Here is a portion of the story written by NPR's Kathy Lohr:
Seven witnesses have recanted their testimony in a Georgia death penalty case, but the execution of convicted murderer Troy Anthony Davis is moving forward.
Davis was convicted of killing a Savannah police officer in the parking lot of a fast food joint in 1989. The case, which has drawn national and international attention, was based solely on eyewitness evidence. Even though most of those witnesses have changed their stories, no court has heard the new testimony...
These witnesses have recanted their testimony! Apparently, they were coerced into naming Troy Davis as the guilty party. Since the victim was a police officer, it is not far fetched to come to the conclusion there could be some coercion in this debacle.
Please join me in writing the Governor of Georgia, requesting a re-examination of this case. Troy's life depends on it.
