This op-ed appropriately sums up all we need to say to the right-wingers...
The people who hate America are the members of American Family Association and its ideological fellow travelers. They're the ones who do not believe that all people are created equal and are endowed by their creator with certain inalienable rights, and that among these rights are life, liberty and pursuit of happiness. They're the ones who believe that this country was founded on hate and fear; they're the ones who want the hate and fear to continue.
Amen brother! It's about frickin' time.
As a gay man, every day I feel like I'm walking around with a big X on my chest, even though I live in a liberal city and don't face discrimination in my workplace or accommodations. I can hold my boyfriend's hand while walking down the street, and I can eat dinner with him, just the two of us, without getting stares.
And, quite honestly, the efforts of the AFA, FRC, and all these other "family" organizations, empower people to discriminate openly. It's high time we call them out on their fascist natures and stand up for our democracy. (Doubt their tactics are fascist? Check out V for Vendetta.)
And if you don't think they're coming for you, that's because you haven't grown up knowing you're an easy target, but, trust me, this doesn't stop with the gays. We're just the first ones to get targeted. Next it's the women seeking abortions. Then it's the guys who like porn. Then it's the couples that use family planning (of any sort).
Of course, that's their agenda. And then there's the agenda of all those incendiary gay couples with children:
The gay and lesbian parents I know are too busy to have an agenda, unless the agenda is "1. cook dinner, 2. wash clothes, 3. find frog." They're doing the usual stuff, teaching manners and insisting on homework and keeping doctor's appointments and reading bedtime stories. It's all very conventional and humdrum; families with kids often look pretty boring from the outside.
