I mean, you got the first mainstream African-American, who is articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy.
Joe Biden said these words, and I defended him. And with a few demure exceptions, I got blasted. Less for defending him, and more for how I defended him, which in my mind only solidified my point.
Being my first post, I understand now that the title was incendiary, but the diary post and its contents were apparently no less so.
In retrospect, one of the major themes in the comments was valid in that I perhaps should have substituted "a great many diarists on Kos" (as a great many had thrown Biden under the ubiquitous bus) for "liberals". But somehow, I can't tear myself away from the latter, as I have many problems with the left; it's propensity to seek injustice and intolerance with such vigor that no one is considered innocent is chief among them.
But revisiting my first post and smiling at the silliness that ensued is not my point here. My point is to show those who might think that the Clinton/Obama divide is still too great and too rancorous to heal that it might not be so. Just look at how violently Biden (and by extension, those who defended him) was bashed; now, he's got the support of many a former detractor.
And while I am not actually a Democrat, I cheer those who flock to the Obama/Biden ticket, particularly those who so forcefully opposed Biden only last year. I take heart in my assumption that these people realize the stakes and set aside their lesser disagreements for the good of the country.
Cheers, Democrats. I may not be one of you, but I'm with you.
It's easy to throw liberalism under a bus if you happen to be a troll.
KNUCKLE DRAGGING, SHEET WEARING, DITTO LISTENING, NON-THINKING, MASSES FOLLOWING, THICK HEADED REPUBLICAN.
One can always pick you out in a crowd. You're the one who complains jobs are going oversees then votes for the culture for corruption party.
And five will get you ten you are an anti-gay, gay republican.
Let me be the first liberal to say, I'm glad somebody who has such a knejerk reaction to somebody who has a problem formulating coherent sentences to get his points across being piled on in a presidential campaign won't be joining our camp.
No comment ratings at all?? Yeah right. You just felt compelled this morning to scold liberals for attacking Mr. Biden out of concern for our party. (Inserted animated gif of a troll.)
Using the word 'articulate' in reference to black men is in fact almost a cliche of benevolent racism. Anyone who pays attention to such issues knows that calling a black man 'articulate' is a red flag.
Moreover, this is Joe "slave state" Biden we're talking about. It's fair to connect the dots and conclude that, while he isn't a white supremacist and probably isn't a racist either, he is grossly insensitive on the subject of race.
From one of many who didn't read the whole diary, usually accompanied by an accusation of my having a "knee-jerk" reaction:
All the moderate, centrist, mainstream media folks are taking the sentence apart just like everyone else but it is all the liberals fault?
The right wingers are doing it too.
But it is all the liberals fault?
Ya lost me there.
Five recommends on this one, despite my specifically mentioning conservatives:
I don't see what being a liberal or not being a liberal has to do with this issue. I heard conservatives brand those "words" as racist, too. In fact, they rather basked in the slip.
At no point do I suggest no one should have been bothered (Also, the comment then steps on it's own point), but:
To me, the refusal to see why this should bother anyone seems to be very reminiscent of the studied refusal to see "macaca" as a racial slur after Allen said it. It's just another confirmation that white liberalism sometimes just does not get it.
So... if Trent Lott had made the same statement (maybe about Powell), you wouldn't have been part of a pile on suggesting that he's racist?
At least this one read the whole thing through:
i don't call myself liberal or democrat either, for that matter, but i don't get your diary! i think you say you'll never be a liberal, but go on to say you'll never be a conservative, either...so what's the point?
you claim no label and vote for progressive candidates?
congrats!
But the above is then responded to (in reference to my post) with:
It's called being an 'Independent Democrat' ala Joe Lieberman.
This was my favorite:
Gonna take a wild guess: You're white? I'll bet you're "colorblind" too, right?
Would any of these people really not vote for the Obama/Biden ticket? I think they will, and I will join them.
