Right at this moment, there's a top-rated diary about the report that McCain has essentially conceded Michigan to Obama by pulling up stakes and moving out of the mitten state.
Michigan went for McCain over Bush in the 2000 primaries, and has always been considered (along with New Hampshire) one of the few Kerry states that McCain had a chance of peeling away from Obama. Our clusterf*ck "primary" mess this year was another reason he thought it was ripe for the picking. Fortunately, a half-dozen recent polls have apparently convinced Sen. McCain that it just isn't in the cards, so he's packing up shop.
As a Michiganian myself (or Michigander, if you prefer), I'm celebrating this as much as anyone.
HOWEVER, while we can all enjoy a brief smile over this news, we can't slack off now. If anything, this is all the more reason to work even harder--for one thing, given the Michigan GOP's dirty tricks like voter caging of foreclosure victims, etc etc, we have to make sure that Obama doesn't just win, but wins by a SOLID margin, enough to overwhelm any shenanigans on the GOP's part.
For another, it's not just Obama who we need to push over the top:
--Democrat Gary Peters in MI-09 is challenging the awful Joe Knollenberg
--Democrat Mark Schauer in MI-07 is challenging the repugnant Tim Walberg
--Democrat and Southfield Mayor Brenda Lawrence is taking on "institutional" Republican L. Brooks Patterson for Oakland County Executive
--Democrat Sheila Smith is trying to push out Republican (and failed running mate of Dick DeVos) Ruth Johnson as Oakland County Clerk
--Democrat Jane Boudreau is vying to become the first female Oakland County Sheriff against Republican (and failed challenger to Debbie Stabenow) Mike Bouchard
--Democrat Andy Meisner, who has served as my state Representative very well for the past 6 years, is attempting to win the Oakland County Treasurer seat.
--Judge Diane Hathaway is trying to take out the horrific Cliff Taylor in Michigan's Supreme Court
--And of course, the Oakland County Democratic Party could always use some love...
...not to mention dozens of other state and local races that need our help!
UPDATE: Since I'm goading everyone into action, I should probably confess that between work and caring for a toddler, I unfortunately haven't been able to do nearly as much volunteer work this year as in the past. However, I'm donating as much as I can to various candidates, and am doing much of my political website work pro bono to alleviate my conscience :)
