In Munich, avoiding the Octoberfest, my brother, who's a financial analyst for the International Herald Tribune says the dirty truth that they're hiding is that it's all a house of cards that could collapse any minute. They're keeping in on the down-low how far down the economy could really go.
My brother's mad for Obama but wishes Bloomberg had made an independent run. He thinks Bloomberg is the only one with the smarts, the know-how and the toughness to stave off what's going to be a terrible recession at the very least. My brother doesn't think that Obama gets it. He should be knocking heads together and really stepping in to lead. Why is this all down to Nancy Pelosi? Come January this will be his mess to deal with.
It's ironic that 70 years ago this week Chamberlain came here, to Munich, to negotiate "peace in our time". We all know how well that worked out. The British papers reprinted all these article heaping praise on Chamberlain. I don't know who was more shortsighted- Chamberlain, Condi Rice for ignoring all the warnings about 9/11, the House for voting down the bailout or the Packer management for letting go of Brett Favre (he's doing great and the new guy is already out with an injury).
Went to the Bavaria Studio where they just filming Baader Meinhof Komplex, all about the Red Army. Wow those guys were scarier than the Weather Underground. Kidnapped and killed quite a few people. Also went to the new Jewish Museun near the Film Institute. They have an exhibit about the 400 years in Munich without Jews. Sounds like a yiddish or Steve Wright joke- how do you have an exhibit about nothing. Or it's a Dr. Seuss Rhyme- the Nazis were bad and it makes me sad.
