In attempting to say anything half way intelligent about something as momentous as the Vice Presidential debate, I have to confess a cautious position outside the closed doors where my husband is avidly watching.
I may have to watch this on UTube because it's too hard, and perhaps it should be.
I'm suggesting that although I'm not that proud of being too scared by the bloodless but never the less lethal battle of nonwit against potential overreaction, there might be some mental health in my position.
I will read about it in the news; it will be taped and it will be on UTube. But the scary thing is that someone such as Sarah Palin who is clearly always hyper-rehearsed when she is in public, can be-- at her most desperate-- very appealing to many of our citizens. There are several theories about why this is so but to say that it frightens me that she is a serious contender for the "heartbeat away" position is frightening, is for me an understatement. I am guessing as I hear her escalating: the politicians have rehearsed her to egg on her more intelligent opponent in the hopes of having him lose it.
It is primitive, primal, the combat based on stirring up hatreds and fears and competition, the combat which has little to do with content of positions.
I know there are people having debate parties, drinking over the fun of the match, perhaps betting on it, surely hoping one of them falls in utter embarrassment and defeat. For me, it is all too real.
Perhaps the morning will yield a more intelligent perspective, and then again, perhaps not.
