I got this story from Kevin Farmer, the Chair of the Durham County Democratic Party:
"There's this fantastic voter registration dynamo in Durham named Louise. I gave her 500 forms a while ago, and they are pretty much all gone.
Louise drove to Charlotte, to her son's college, and more or less forced all his friends to register (or else); she sneaked into the employee lounge at Southpoint Cinemas and registered the staff; she registered the waitstaff at Applebees one night. Louise never leaves the house without 20 VR forms in her purse.
Louise's children let her know that all this voter registration was getting to be a bit much, that they were embarrassed by it all. Her response has now been immortalized on a special, limited edition, handcrafted button,
made by a very skilled, dedicated lady named Penny Richards, who lives in Portland, Oregon, and who works with the Obama Craft Project. Amazing!"
Tomorrow, the last weekend before conventional registration closes, we'll be working as usual in Durham, but we're also sending teams to Granville and Wayne counties. These are rural countries with a lot of latent Obama support, but very low registration and turnout levels. Bringing these people into the American political system will indeed be historic, as will winning North Carolina for the Dems (the last Democratic presidential candidate to win here was Jimmy Carter in 1976). If you're in a safe blue state and can spare the time and money, please come help us.
