Watching the economic crisis unfold hasn't been pleasant. I haven't slept well because I've been worried about the effect the economic downturn would have on our country. I've been waking up at 4 am with the irrestistable urge to switch on CNBC.
I'm on SSDI and I don't have a lot of income, so a bad economy is especially worrisome since bad inflation can quickly eat up what little there is.
My state is supposed to have a cold front blow through this weekend, and I've been hauling in firewood so I don't have to turn on the heat. Winter heating this year is going to cost big $$$. I live in Utah, so an early winter is typical. The first freeze has actually come a bit late this year, and it's supposed to get close to freezing this weekend.
My yard gets overgrown because I'm disabled and can't do a lot of yard work. My neighbors hate it, but I like it because my yard is the one that always has wildlife. I LOVE wildlife!
I watched out the window as someone working on the power lines next to my house pulled something from a box and let the very large plastic wrapper blow away in the wind. Yeah, that's environmentally sensitive. (not!) I wonder who's going to end up having to pick up that plastic?
I saw two snakes in the yard today - the first I've seen. I'm not scared of snakes, so I enjoyed seeing them. I've never seen a snake move so fluidly and gracefully as it slithered away. I think they were garter snakes, still small and about 12 to 15 inches long.
Tonight, I wandered into the spare bedroom to the sight of my (rescued) kitty laying on his back with all four paws straight up in the air, firmly in possession of the entire king sized bed. Kitties typically lay curled up, but my kitty likes to lay on his back with his paws in the air. I laugh every time I see him like that. From the scared, starving kitten who was too afraid to leave my arms, to the king who owns the house and knows it - I've created an adorable little monster.
After laughing at my cat, I glanced out the window and saw two deer in my yard under the trees in broad daylight. They've settled in and are spending the night under my fruit trees.
I live in a small rural town, but deer in broad daylight are not a common sight. I keep going into my spare bedroom to peek out the window and see the beautiful things camping out in my overgrown yard. I see tall deer ears peeking out from behind the grasses - almost like bunny ears! - and a white tail as the buck browses the overgrown yard while the doe camps out curled on the ground in the middle of the trees.
I think my point is that when events are getting us all stressed and worried, it helps to take time to smell the roses - or laugh at your kitties and watch the deer from your window. Wall Street can crash, but there are still beautiful things in our world that make life good.
