There are leaders and followers. Followers don't lead, and leaders don't follow.
Mavericks, on the other hand, don't follow, and don't lead, because if they could convince anyone to follow them, they'd be leaders.
Seems to me a maverick is the worst possible candidate to be an executive, because he couldn't get anyone behind him to get anything accomplished. Worse still is a follower who thinks he is a maverick, isn't, and imagines that being a maverick is a good thing in a presidential candidate!
What does he think this job requires, anyway? Wandering off on your own around the wilderness in Wyoming? Look, I'm a maverick! Oh, there's no one here to hear me...Wheeee! I'm a maverick! Wait till I get back so I can tell them all what a maverick I am! (They'll be so impressed, I'm sure they'll follow me NEXT time I wander off....)
